Gelidus provides down-flow cooling solution for college’s main server room.

The Details

The Challenge

When the IT team at Sparsholt College secured funding for a new suite of servers, they approached Gelidus wanting a robust cooling solution. The IT team were keen to avoid the use of comfort type air conditioners that are better suited to 8-10 hours of operation per day, and instead wanted the improved air pattern and durability of data-centre type cooling equipment. Most importantly, they needed this solution to fit their size and budget.

The Solution

Gelidus worked with the college IT team to understand their needs and propose a solution that best suited them. A close-control down-flow arrangement was chosen, based on the use of 2 compact CD3 cooling units from Marstair. Each twin-circuit system was sized to accommodate the maximum heat-output rating of the new servers to provide the college with the reassurance of 100% duty backup. A raised floor was installed and floor grilles arranged to supply cool air in front of the new server cabinets, with the CD3 units collecting the warmer air from behind to provide an efficient air pattern within the room.

The college were delighted with the end result of having achieved a robust, data-centre type cooling arrangement in a relatively small room.
